This evening we have to book it over to Alliance, Nebraska for the chance to see a one of a kind roadside attraction!
During the recent eclipse, Carhenge saw over 4,000 visitors, including Nebraska’s own governor!
Carhenge
In the summer of 1987, Jim Reinders built and dedicated this memorial to his father out of vintage American automobiles.
As we approach, we’re already impressed with this grand masterpiece!
We quickly realize the path to the cars is not shovelled, so we leap quickly, like deer, to avoid snow getting in our shoes! 🦌
The snow is a little less than a foot deep, so it’s not too bad. We frolic on out for a close up of this Stonehenge replica.
After seeing these roses left behind, we can’t help but wonder if there was a missed love connection?!?! 💔
Jim Reinders grew up in England and had always dreamed of creating a replica of Stonehenge. It wasn’t until after his father’s death that his family placed a variety of 39 cars to replicate Stonehenge.
Originally the cars were not painted, but we read that Jim painted them grey to further ressemble Stonehenge.
We are so impressed with the ability to stack the cars in the manner he has.
Autograph Car
Off a ways from the Stonehenge is the autograph car.
Don’t worry, there are signs designating this as such.
We must find our own unique spot to sign it.
Driver side????? Meh….
Passenger side???? Too full!!!
Maybe we can climb up further where there is more space?!?!?
Forgot how cold a metal car might be in FREEZING temperatures. The climb nearly freezes Kali’s hands to the vehicle, almost making her a fixture till Spring! …so….we decide to look low again.
We’ll settle for the driver side door in this small spot.
What shall we write???
Almost done……
…..Tommy adds the final touches…..
…. and voila!!!!! There it is!!!!
We’re pretty proud of our contribution to this structure!
It’s not everyday you get to add some graffitti to a monument.
Other Sculptures
This must be his version of a station WAGON!!!
The set of cars beyond is called the “Ford Seasons”!!
As we lookoutside of the Carhenge circle, we see other pieces of art created by other sculptors to be added to this unique attraction.
Dinosaurs roam the outskirts of the circle….
There in the back we can see the “Spawning Salmon”, created by Geoff Sandhurst during a sculpting contest.
Carhenge is impressive from every angle!
The sun is beginning to set, so we must work our way back to the van.
As we exit the small park, we take a quick breather on this car bench.
The rush of reaching Carhenge before nightfall was well worth it.
As we depart, we’re blessed to have a gorgeous sunset follow us to our next destination.
A quick stop in town for a fillup finds us this unique store sign.
Then we’re off to where the next day will take us….
